The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre presents National Indigenous History Month programming from June 1 to 30

DURING NATIONAL INDIGENOUS History Month, the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre in Whistler is hosting a full slate of programming to honour Indigenous cultures, traditions, and experiences, including a community celebration on June 21 for National Indigenous Peoples Day.

The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre invites visitors to connect with the land and its people with their revitalized permanent exhibitions and extensive summer programs.

Open seven days a week for the summer season, the SLCC’s exhibitions in the Great Hall and Gallery One feature carefully curated interpretive content that highlights the voices and perspectives of the Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) and Líl ̓wat7úl (Lil’wat Nation).

Daily tours led by cultural ambassadors include the Legends of the Land storytelling tour, the Interpretive Forest Walk, and the What We Treasure Tour. As a part of the Nourish Whistler Wellness Series, the Forest Walk & Tea tour takes place on June 7, 14, and 28, from 3 pm to 4:30 pm.

Throughout the month, visitors can also enrol in workshops focused on everything from braided leather cuffs and drums to buckskin medicine bags and dreamcatchers. And on the first Saturday of each month this summer, from June 7 to September 6, the Vendor Market in the Great Hall will gather Squamish and Lil’wat artists and creatives.

In celebration of National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, the SLCC plans to host an array of events, including a fashion show in partnership with Vancouver Indigenous Fashion Week, tours, and a market and demonstrations by artists. Live music and performances are in store, featuring internationally acclaimed DJ Kookum, the Spiritual Warriors, and comedian Keith “Bubbas” Nahanee.
