WEST COAST MODERN WEEK has just announced its return to Vancouver this summer, with walking tours, a film screening, and more planned from July 8 to 13.

The festivities will kick off on July 8 at 6 pm with the West Coast Modern Week Launch Party at the West Vancouver Art Gallery, complete with a live DJ, wine, and refreshments.

On July 9, 10, and 13, Walking Tours: The Facets of Modernism promises a two-kilometre guided stroll through Ambleside to observe and discuss elements of the mid-century-modern style. Tour participants will also get a rare look inside the interiors of several iconic privately owned buildings. The walk begins at the Seniors’ Activity Centre in West Vancouver.

A talk called John Patkau: Material Operations at The Polygon Gallery on July 9 will feature the titular Canadian architect—whose firm Patkau Architects has designed the Audain Art Museum in Whistler, Arbour House in Victoria, and The Polygon Gallery itself, to name a few accomplishments—in discussion about the use of unconventional materials in architecture. The event is presented in partnership with the West Vancouver Art Museum, the West Coast Modern League, and The Polygon Gallery.

On a similar note, the exhibition Patkau Architects: Matter Made Material will be on display at the West Vancouver Art Museum from May 14 to July 19. Drop by for a free opening reception on May 13 at 6 pm. The exhibition revolves around the firm’s particularly thoughtful use of light.

Over at the Kay Meek Arts Centre, a two-part event on July 10 will include a screening of the film Arthur Erickson: Beauty Between the Lines, which captures the visionary architect’s untold tragedies and triumphs of both a personal and professional nature. The work will be followed by the Annual Barry Downs Lecture Series with The Architecture of Encounter led by Jeff Derksen, who will relate Erickson’s architecture to how encounters are created within buildings.

On July 12 is the 19th Annual West Coast Modern Home Tour, which will take attendees to five stunning residences across West Vancouver. This year, the tour includes Montiverdi Estates, designed by Erickson from 1979-82; the Taylor Residence, designed by Daniel Evan White in 1983; the Rayer Residence, designed by Barry Downs and Fred Hollingsworth in 1964; the Forrest-Baker Residence, designed by Ron Thom and Dick Mann in 1962; and the Eastwood-Seth Residence, designed by CBK Van Norman in 1954.

An After Party at the Eagle Harbour Yacht Club will conclude the tour, with wine and refreshments served against an ocean-view backdrop. And the following day on July 13, there will be a West Coast Modern Week Concert, with more details to come soon.

Tickets for all events go on sale May 9 at 8 am.
